We will also be donating money to DisCASS (Disabled Citizens’ Advice & Support Services) as before.
The remainder of the money raised from the 2006 fete (£2000) has been donated to Hascombe Ward to purchase two monitors that allow nursing staff to remotely monitor a child’s condition.

Hascombe Ward has 32 beds or cots covering all specialities. It is a busy general paediatric Ward, offering family-centred care for children from 0-16 years. Hascombe Ward also cares for children with cancer, their care being shared with The Royal Marsden and Great Ormond Street Hospitals. The Ward is always in need of additional funds and I am sure you will agree is a cause well worth supporting.

We are now starting to collect good quality items for the Brick-a-Brack stall, contact Ted Dwyer (01483 208593). We are also recruiting teams for the Tug of War competition. Hugh included many old photographs of people and places including the a map of Hascombe constructed from the tithe maps of Hascombe, Hambledon and Godalming dating from 1819 to the mid 19th century.

The map showed what we now know as the Street, which was in fact the toll road from ‘Godalming, through Hascombe, to Pains Hill in the County of Surrey’. The bill to build the road was sponsored by local landowners and received the Royal Assent in 1826. Until then there was no road between Godalming and Hascombe, just windswept heath and a steep hill (Winkworth Hill) between the two. The old road ran from the White Horse, along Church Road, past Matthews Place, Upper House Farm and then onto Bramley. The new turnpike road effectively split Hascombe village in two, the old and the new - the little cluster of Bargate houses around St.Peter’s and the new houses of brick built alongside the turnpike. A memorial garden was created for her next to Oliver’s, before the pond was made, that is why, two seats face the church and not the view of the pond.
She kept a record book of the ‘Names of those buried in Hascombe Church Yard’ that goes back to 1670. There are names from past history; Coverts, Rowcliffe, Godman, Stilwell, Oliver and information as to trades;
Gardener, shepherd, keeper, butler, blacksmith, mole catcher, chauffeur. How some died is recorded ‘accidentally shot in harvest field’, ‘drowned’, ‘kicked by horse’, fell off hay wagon’, ‘fell down belfry steps’.
In 1893 new ground was added to the churchyard on the west. There’s mention of a memorial stone being smashed by a falling elm tree during a gale in January 1930.
In 1941 the body of Erich Schlect, a German airman, was buried in the new churchyard, but removed after the War. Phyllis Reed still recalls the frightening moment of discovering the body on her postal round to the Nore.
This book is now part of the Hascombe Archives, it stops in 1964 but family names of those still living in the Village bring back memories: Briggs, Stenning, Hawkins, Porter and Pearl.
May all Rest in Peace. With the view of directing the thoughts of Christians to the first coming of Jesus Christ as Saviour, and to his second coming as Judge, special lessons are prescribed for each of the four Sundays in Advent.

Advent in the Christian sense refers to the four weeks before Christmas. The four Sundays of Advent are often traditionally celebrated with four candles with one to be lit each Sunday. Each candle has a specific meaning associated with different aspects of the Advent story. The first one almost always symbolizes expectant hope and is sometimes associated with prophecy. The others are organized around characters or themes as a way to unfold the story and direct attention to the celebrations and worship in the season, such as Peace, Love or Joy. The third (and sometimes fourth) is generally symbolic of Joy at the imminence of the coming of Christ. A fifth, white or gold, candle -- called a "Christ Candle" -- is often lit in the centre on Christmas Eve and/or Christmas Day to signify Christ's birth.
For Catholics and Protestants alike, the colour of the first, second and fourth candles are purple (or blue), but the third is often rose-coloured, to joyfully represent Gaudete Sunday with a less sombre liturgy. A few non-liturgical Christians, for whom different coloured candles are unavailable, use red candles for all four Sundays.
EVELYN VASS’S KASHMIR CHUTNEY
Trish is again making Kashmir Chutney,. It has its origins in the Moravian Church , with the first recorded use, in Germany, in 1747.
This is the story of the first Christingle:
One Christmas time back in 1747 at a town in Germany, Pastor John sat at home in front of his fire. He was thinking how he could explain the love of Jesus, and what Christmas really meant to the children in the church. He decided to prepare a simple symbol to help make the message of Christmas fresh and lively for them. Pastor John gave each child a lighted candle wrapped in a red ribbon, with a prayer that said "Lord Jesus, kindle a flame in these dear children's hearts". This was the first ever Christingle service.
Many years later, in 1968, Christingle services were introduced to the Anglican Church in Britain by John Pensom of The Children's Society, and the custom spread quickly; each year there are more and more Christingle services in England and Wales, although today's Christingles are a little different.
The Christingle consists of:
an orange representing the world with
a red ribbon around it representing the blood of Jesus
fruits and sweets (usually dolly mixtures) are skewered on 4 cocktail sticks which are pushed into the orange representing the fruits of the earth and the four seasons
and a lighted candle is pushed into the centre of the orange representing Christ, the light of the world
THE ONSLOW SINGERS
CONCERT
in
St. PETER’S CHURCH
on
WEDNESDAY, 5th DECEMBER
at
7.30 p.m.
WINE AND NIBBLES
Retiring Collection for a Guildford Charity for the Homeless
Do come and support the Onslow Singers Conductor: David Jopson

Miss Daisey Coote 1892-1978

The overgrown Memorial Garden, next to Oliver’s by the pond, has now been cleared and three ornamental trees have been planted as a significant feature. The birdbath, with its plaque dedicated to Miss Daisy Coote, remains in place and is now clearly visible.
The birdbath is a very fitting Memorial to Miss Coote, a much-loved village schoolteacher and dedicated animal lover. She lived almost opposite the school at Nuthurst, the first of three cottages, once Almshouses but now one house, Church Cottage.
A 1968 newspaper cutting tells how an RSPCA official brought two young house martins, which had fallen from their nest, to her knowing she had successfully reared young thrushes. After a month’s care they were on the verge of flying. Other animals in her household were a pet goose, two common ducks, a muscovy duck, four hens, three guinea pigs, a tortoise, three dogs and three cats.
Miss Coote taught at the School from 1917-1957 and was churchwarden and PCC secretary. Many friends and old pupils subscribed to her memorial. The clearance has made it possible for the garden to be regularly maintained at the same time as the Pond's and its surroundings is being attended to.
Our thanks to the Friends of Hascombe who paid for the restoration work.

Pond Service at Hascombe - 8 July 2007 - 6.00 pm

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_xJFnWYMQ5Vw/Rn6Kd7MexJI/AAAAAAAAAAU/qCJy6gxYzq0/s320/hascombe+pond+service.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5079649676431377554" />
PRESS RELEASE

It must be approaching 25 years since we held our first “Pond Service” at Hascombe, says Colin Swait who came up with the idea originally and invited Godalming Town Band to play. We always say “if wet, the service will be in Church” but I can only think of two or three times when that has happened. This year the service starts at 6.00 pm on Sunday the 8th July and we hope it will be packed out. Godalming Band will be playing as usual and lots of people bring picnics or pop in to the White Horse for supper afterwards. We look forward to seeing you all and whilst there do visit the outstanding highly decorated Church of St Peter.
